It's HOT

I haven't written in a few weeks and now I can look back and appreciate the accomplishments I've made. Since joining the Talbot County Masters team I practice once a week on Wednesday nights and hop in the pool one other time per week. I can't make the Sat AM practice and Sunday is mostly for resting. The swimming is great, I'm doing just enough to help build cardiovascular endurance but not doing too much to hurt my shoulders.

The pilates are great fun. I take that class twice a week and usually run a 40 minute maintenance run the other two days before resting on Friday for our Saturday run.

Four Saturdays ago we were timed for a three miler and put in pace groups. My group has 6 members and we enjoy our runs. The longest has be 6 miles and it was HOT. That slowed us down a bit. We will begin to start running at 6AM soon. That of course means I'll be up at 4:30 so that I can have some coffee, hydrate and get a good meal in.

I've come to realize how important water is to running. I usually have it with me at the gym but don't always intake while running; but then I'm only running about 3 miles in air conditioning. Now that we are breaking the hour threshold for our runs we'll be taking in fuel as well. I have to find some fuel that works for me so I have to pick up a few different types and see what I like and go from there.

I'm tired and I'm sure I'm not stretching enough after runs so I will be working on that!

Achy...

Although I'm feeling very good about the run and loving the total approach to getting into shape, I'm really tender. My shoulder hurts a lot. My Sunday swim was just too much.....I've learned. I'm excited that I finally bought myself the iPod Shuffle. Much nicer than the larger iPod I've been carrying around which has been to bulky.

Yesterday I went to my first Pilates class in years and loved it. I'm sore but it is going to be a great way to build strength in my core.

I'm off to take a slow jog and do some shoulder therapy today. The boys are on an adventure with Daddy today so I have some peace and quiet!

Swimming & Equipment

Yesterday was supposed to be my rest day with a nice 5K walk with some girlfriends - we've rescheduled due to illness. With the free time, the boys, Kevin and I went to our local airport diner and enjoyed good, cheap food.

In the early evening I went to my second TCY Master swim practice. It was tough! There was a small group of people and we ended up swimming 4050 yards. My muscles are tight and I had a hard time sleeping with some discomfort but I'm feeling better and after the swim I wasn't sooo fatigued and hungry!!! That's good, I guess.

Tonight, the boys and I made a trip to Fleet Feet in Annapolis for some equipment and loaded up on some things. It was a taxing trip on the boys but we made it through and had some McDonalds on our ride home!

Getting excited!

I know the race is months away, but I'm feeling really psyched about it! I'm also tired. Yesterday I did some weights and swam about a 1200. I'm working on strengthening my core muscles and it's tiresome work but I'm feeling a difference!

My appetite has increased and I feel tired after workouts which were not the effects of basic cardio workouts. Now that I'm swimming (2000 today) and doing weights I feel fatigued for quite a bit of time after I workout and my recovery is taking longer. Although, I see a drastic improvement from my first attempt in the pool! I dragged for about 48 hours, not 2....so things are getting better.

Another exciting development is that I'm getting some sponsors for my fundraising. People are able to sponsor muscle groups/body parts and can buy a phone call from a mile marker or a specific landmark along the route. People seem to like those ideas!

Tomorrow is my rest day but I'll be walking a 5K with some girlfriends in Salisbury. It's to raise money for March of Dimes and it should be nice - I'd rather rest my quads but the exercise will be a good stretch.

Swim, Rebecca, Swim....

Last night I was able to leave the boys at home with a babysitter and hit the pool with the Talbot County Manta Ray masters swim team. I've been toying with the idea of joining it since moving here but never seemed to get around to it. I spoke to the team captain earlier this week and decided I'd give it a go.

Our coach is a nice fellow named Glenn whose been swimming (very successfully) for years. We did stroke drills, which were great, and some streamline work. All fun! It was a good workout for my heart and didn't stain my shoulders too much.

I will be trying to fit the swimming in twice a week, which will be hard until the end of soccer season for the boys (three more weeks).

Regardless, I think it will be a great cross-training method for the marathon and look forward to the strength training it should offer.

Fatigue...already

I'm tired. I'm not too sure what the actual cause of this 'bone tired' fatigue is, but it's very real! I have a theory that it may have to do with swimming and diet, so I'm going to remedy it.

The swimming is a bit tough and tonight I'll be making it to the master's practice to check it out. I may join it in order to get an organized approach to my swimming/strength building while having some company. Swimming alone is ok, but having someone to talk to at the wall is nice!

This weekend I'm off to get more equipment. An Annapolis store is giving our group a discount and I'm off to get new shoes - I've clocked enough miles that I need new ones for sure! I'm excited about that.....

Here it goes....

Just to let everyone know...I'm not a runner! I took this on as a personal challenge and one that I'm now convinced I can complete. Last year, upon my arrival to Easton I met my wonderful neighbor Susan and she introduced me to Easton ROCKS. I began volunteering my time to pass out water for marathon trainers that were raising money. I decided I would finally tackle another item on 'my list' of things to do - running a marathon.

Amy, of Easton ROCKS, and the head coach showed me how to run. I'd been doing it wrong all these years. I by no means feel like a star runner but I do not feel the joint pain I once did. I was also enlightened on running gear - it's not cheap - but good gear is worth every cent.

This journey should be a good one. I'm determined to raise funds while challenging myself physically! I will be using this blog to let you know where I am in my training and to keep you up to date on the fundraising goals for not only myself but the 25 or so other wonderful runners that are bringing home the bacon for our kids!

As of now the official training has not begun. We'll have a time trial on the 17th of May, I think, to put us in pace groups. Since heading back to MD last year I've been fairly good at making it to the YMCA 4 to 5 times a week but sadly just concentrating mostly on cardio. Now that I've got a marathon to train for I've been quite disciplined about cross training. On the 17th of March I got in the pool for the first time since 1998 (to swim laps, that is). It hurt like you wouldn't believe and I couldn't stop inhaling food for the rest of the day, long day of eating, I'll tell you. I've been getting in to swim a mile about 2 to 3 times a week, hitting the treadmill the other 2 to 3 times a week and fitting in some weights. Our YMCA has a 90 minute limit on daycare so I sometimes don't get everything done!

I will embark on a new pilates course when I get a schedule with Oliver panned out. We both seem to get a bit distracted after Owen's bus picks him up and don't seem to make it to the Y in time for that scheduled class. Since starting a few laps my shoulders hurt like the dickens so my weight work has to include basic physical therapy for that.

My two biggest stumbling blocks: a weak core and boredom on the treadmill. I'm working very hard on abs and lower back core exercises and I'm hoping the group training will help me get past the 3 mile mark on the treadmill. My first run that was longer than that was between 4 and 5 miles and that was outside - very invigorating!

So, this is the beginning. Stop by to give words of encouragement or read for encouragement of your own. If I can do this, so can you!
